A Message from Ms. Nims

"People ask me to predict the future, when all I want to do is prevent it. Better yet, build it. Predicting the future is much too easy, anyway. You look at the people around you, the street you stand on, the visible air you breathe, and predict more of the same. To hell with more. I want better."

Weekly Agenda 2/6 - 2/10

Monday 2/6 - Late Entry (5, 6, 7, 1)

- 1984 Part One Quiz

Homework:
2 page essay (typed, double-spaced): "How is language used to shape reality and to control people's thoughts and behaviors?"

You must include a clear thesis in which you make an assertion about the power of language to shape reality and control thoughts and behavior. Your essay must also include examples to support your points. As much as possible, these examples must be based on fact. Think about the world today as well as historical examples.

This essay will be graded as an Open Response (not a major assessment). I’m looking for thoughtfulness, insight and clarity as well as some actual examples of how language can shape our realities or control our thoughts and behaviors.

Due: Thursday 2/9
